Description

COPY OF A LETTER FROM DAVID A. WORKMAN TO HEIRS OF WILLIAM WORKMAN,17 NOVEMBER 1972 Color: Black; White A copy of a letter (a) and envelope (b) by David A. Workman to the heirs of William Workman, thorugh his daughter, A. M. W. Temple, 17 November 1972. Typed on the letterhead of the law firm of Thorpe, Sullivan, Clinnin and Workman, of which Workman was a member, the document is from Workman to his cousins outlining a plan to seek compensation for a claim to San Clemente Island, granted by Pio Pico to his brother Andres and to William Workman in 1846. As a preliminary step, Workman identified that a bill might be put forward before Congress authorizing claimants to the island to present a claim to the federal District Court. In addition to soliciting direct heirs of William Workman on their desire to press a claim, Workman also asked that he and, possibly, his three brother, share in the claim given their ability to move the matter through political and legal channels. Workman also requested assistance in finding other heirs. The letter was copied to ten members of the Temple family and signed by Workman. The envelope is on yellow stationery from the law firm and is addressed to Robert P. Temple. A cancelled stamp is at the upper right. Aside from some paper clip rust stains at the top left and quarter folds, the document is in good condition.
