"Cottage Residences," by Andrew Jackson Downing (New York: Wiley & Halsted, 1856), 215 pp. The book has a green hardcover with an illustration at the center of the front of a balcony window surrounded by ivy, all in gold. Also on the front is an embossed ornate border. Adhered to the inside of the front and back covers are labels for the Essex Institute Library. At the top of the spine is "DOWNING'S / COTTAGE / RESIDENCES / AND / COTTAGE / GROUNDS," and at the bottom is an illustration of a tower. All of the latter is in gold. At the beginning of the inside are a title page, a preface, and a table of contents. The artifact has fifteen chapters that cover such subjects as suburban cottages; English cottages; Tudor architecture; farm houses; villas; Tuscan architecture; Rhine architecture; and much more. Each subject includes gardening ideas. Many black and white illustrations and floor plans are included. With abrasions; slightly dented corners; fading of the gold printing on the cover; foxing; some surface soiling; small stains; and some tears on the cover fabric, the object is in fair condition.
