Description

Color: Orange A cotton brassiere owned by an unknown member of the Workman family, ca. 1900. The piece has a cotton mesh upper section and thin shoulder straps, while the majority of the lower portion of the piece is silk. At the top and lower edges of the mesh are curved emroidered borders, while in between are five-petaled floral designs, also embroidered. This same motif of curved borders and five-petaled flowers are on the shoulder straps. On the back of the mesh section, however, are two blue silk flowers with green leaves sewed onto the fabric. The silk section is large unornamented, although the top does feature three lines of pierced work. The material is gathered at the bottom. On the back, there are four buttons to secure the garment and two thin pink silk strips to tie together, though these don't appear to provide much tightening. On the inside of the front is a label reading "B. ALTMAN & CO. / NEW YORK." Aside from heavy creasing and wrinkling on the silk and a few loose threads, the garment is in good condition.
