COTTON MESH BRASSIEREEntry/Object ID
99.26.1.1Description
Color: White
A cotton brassiere owned by an unknown member of the Workman family, ca. 1900. The piece has a mesh-like material with thin shoulder straps and features designs with embroidered flowers, curved lines and some geometric shapes. At the top, for example, there are designs that look like wreaths, under which are stalk-like elements. Below this are curved lines and then a series of 10 flowers with stalks. Toward the middle are more circular flower-like designs linked by vines. At the bottom are tightly-woven flowers with leaves. The straps appear to have clover-like designs on them. On the inside of the piece, running along the top through the back, front and shoulders is the tightening ribbon, in a pale green color, of which about six to eight inches dangles over the back after it emerges from the stitched housing in the garment. There is a stain just right of center in the front and some loose threads, but the garment is in otherwise good condition.Lexicon
