Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the courtyard at Mission San Juan Capistrano, ca. 1920s. Across the center is a grassy area with a sign at the left which reads, "NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION / DONATIONS SOLICITED IN UNITS OF $50.00 EACH / WILL YOU GIVE A UNIT? AMOUNT NEEDED $2000.00." Behind this is a barbed-wire fence and a construction area. The mission is across the back and it has ceramic shingles on the roof, two-stories at the far left and right, and a single floor at the middle. Many small windows line the second floor at the left, while there are only three on the right side where there is also an arched tower topped by a cross. Many windows and doors are behind the building's arcade which is across the front of the bottom. On the back bottom right corner is the number, "14." The photograph was housed in Agnes Temple's album which is item 96.7.94.1 along with many other photographs which span 96.7.1.1-.93.1. Contact sheets 2000.159.1.1-.8 show the original positioning of the images within the album. With some yellowing of the paper and light stains, the artifact is in good condition overall. Number-Units: 1
