Description

Color: Black; White A reproduction black and white photograph of the Cummings Block, Boyle Heights, ca. 1889. The photographer stood in the intersection of First Steet, running to the west at the left, and Boyle Avenue, from which the streetcar is coming from the north. The three-story, brick commercial building has a cupola extending from the corner at the third floor and includes an observation deck at the roofline. Several persons are on this deck looking out over the scene. An inscription reading "CUMMINGS / BLOCK / 1889" is within a panel at the south and east elevations near the corner, just below the cupola. The main entrance is on Boyle, where two men are standing on the sidewalk in front, though there is a storefront and side entrance off first. At the corner in front of the building are a few pedestrians, as well as a carriage drawn by two white horses. There is also a man leaning against a cornice over the entrance at the roof of the building. At far left, there appears to be part of a streetcar on First Street heading east. The structure, though greatly altered and lacking the cupola deck and roof, still stands. As a newly produced photograph, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
