Description

DETAIL OF PAINTING ON BASEMENT VAULT DOOR BEFORE RESTORATION Color: Brown A color photograph of a detail from the La Casa Nueva basement vault after an overcoat of paint was stripped, but before restoration commenced, October 1979. The detail is a section of the above center and consists of the name of the vault's manufacturer and city of location with some decorative elements above and below. The name "DIEBOLD SAFE & LOCK C[O] / CANTON.O." is in block letters, while the design at top looks somewhat like a stylized floral pattern. Just above and below the company name are elongated, almost teardrop-shaped elements. The colors appear to be a light blue, brown and white. Numerous scratches and damaged paint show the door just after the stripping of an overcoat of whitewash and prior to restoration. On the reverse in dark ink is the inscription "Temple Basmt. vault door / after uncovering overpaint / prior to restoration / detail of mefgr.'s identification / on door / slide taken by Walt Mancini, / Pasa. Oct. 1979 / Slide No. 35 / orig. in office of . . ." Next to this last line is a stamp, covered by a piece of tape, for restoration architect Raymond Girvigian with his name, address, and telephone number. In good condition, the artifact has, aside from smearing of the stamp and slight ink smears at the right side of the reverse and right edge of the front, little indication of wear or damage.
