"Diary of Gaspar de Portola During the California Expedition of 1769-1770," Volume 1, Number 3 of the Publications of the Academy of Pacific Coast History, University of California, Berkeley, California, October 1909. The 59-page work has a brown paper binding with the series title, volume and number, title, editors' names, publisher's name, date, and price on the front. After an introduction and a biographical note on Portola, the translation of the diary, which covers the first land-based exploration of California by Europeans, led by Portola, follows. The text has facing pages of the original Spanish and the English translation. Of note on pages 22-23 is Portola's description of the construction of a bridge (puente) giving the name of the future Puente Valley and Rancho La Puente. At the rear is the text of a "council of war" from the expedition, dated 4 October 1769, and which concerns what the expedition should do in its further explorations or in returning to Baja California. On the inside of the covers are information on the Academy of Pacific Coast History (front) and a list of current and future publications in the series (back.) With light cover creases and soiling; page yellowing; a loss to the bottom right corner of the first page; and tears at the bottom right corner of the same page; the overall condition is good.Lexicon
