Description

DINING HALL FOR LOS ANGELES CABLE RAILWAY ARRIVAL EVENT, 1889 Color: Black; White A reproduced black and white photograph of the dining area at the power plant of the Los Angeles Cable Railway Co. in honor of the arrival of the company's first car to Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, August 1889. The structure is a cavernous hall of whitewashed brick with tall ceilings and tall, narrow support posts, which are decorated with plant material, appearing like palm fronds, as well as striped paper. At the center of the room, between posts, are lengths of striped bunting. Decorating the walls are garlands of more plant material, both at the far right and across the background. On this latter wall, several flags are hung from the ceiling. At the upper center of the wall is the wording "BOYLE HEIGHTS / WELCOMES / THE CABLE RAILWAY AUG. 1889." At least seven rows of tables with benches are on the dirt floor and the tables have white table covers and there are place settings for hundreds of persons with fruit, wine, and other items at the center of each table. What is probably a head table is set up along the background wall. What may be an entrance seems to be at the upper left background. The dinner was thrown by Boyle Heights founder William H. Workman and others to celebrate the arrival of the cable railway that day and related images are items .26 and .27. As a newly produced photograph, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
