Description

DORIS ROMERO ON A BURRO IN LA CASA NUEVA'S COURTYARD, CA. 1928 Color: Black; White A black and white negative of Doris Romero on a burro in La Casa Nueva's courtyard, ca. 1928. Doris is in the center mounted on the animal. Facing to the right, she wears a straw hat, long-sleeve shirt, pants, and laced boots. She faces the photographer while holding the reins in her right hand. Equipped only with a bridle, the burro is positioned to the right but its head is turned back to the left. It has dark hair throughout its body except for the stomach, snout, and around the eyes, where it is light. The area where the burro is standing is dirt while across the back is the raised west corridor of the courtyard. On the left side of the stone covered walkway is a white pillar, two potted plants, and an archway in which a portion of the Tepee and Mission Walkway can be seen. On the right, covered by shade, is an iron easel, standing ceramic pot, and a potted palm in front of the screen door to the housekeeper's bedroom. Doris Romero is the daughter of Frank Romero, ranch foreman, chauffeur, and brother of the Temple family housekeeper, Maud Romero Bassity. With no signs of wear, the image, which has a corresponding photograph in 99.5.7.176, is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
