Description

DRAFT, WILLIAM W. TEMPLE TO ANITA BALDWIN AND CLARA BALDWIN STOCKER, 17 OCTOBER 1913 A draft of a letter from William W. Temple to Anita Baldwin and Clara Baldwin Stocker, 17 October 1913. Written in pencil on both sides of four sheets of sand-colored ruled and lined paper (a-d) with a plain sheet of paper as a sort of envelope (e), the letter is a rambling, vague appeal to the Baldwin sisters, as heirs of Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin, their father, to assist the Temples, financially evidently. Details the transfer of the family lands to Baldwin after the failure of the Temple and Workman bank in 1876 and describes the impecunious financial condition of William and his siblings. The letter is in fair condition with holes from a pin used to keep the sheets together; folds into fourths; and discoloration. The "envelope" sheet, labeled "Copy / of letter / to / Baldwin / heirs / dated / Oct 17th / 1913-", is in poor condition with folds into fourths; a few stains; discoloration; creases; tears; and several pest holes.
