EDMUND BURKE TO A. K. MAROPOULOS, UNDATED BUT PROBABLY 9 JUNE 1916
Color: Black; White
A letter from Edmund Burke to A. K. Maropoulos, undated but probably 9 June 1916 (see items .9-.11 for dating.) The three-page item, on the letterhead of the Safety Advertising Match Company, is handwritten and concerns the disappearance of the original grant of Alcatraz Island from Pio Pico to William Workman in 1846. Essentially, Burke stated that he gave the document, "bound in plate glass," to Chicago Congressman James McAndrews in 1905 after receiving it from Maropoulos three years previously and the papers had not been seen by Burke since. Moreover, McAndrews claimed never to have seen the deed or to know where it was. Burke stated he would employ a detective agency in Chicago to find the deed and associated papers. In the meantime, he offered a few conditions in case a suit was filed against him by Maropoulos (see item .8) for compensation on the value of the deed and papers. Also of note is a vague reference to "the statements made on Friday to Mr. Houghton (threats to kill etc.)" With staple holes at the upper left, horizontal and vertical folds, small tears on these folds, and page browning, the document is in fair condition.Lexicon
