Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of eight girls at the Mission San Gabriel, July 1921. Two girls are kneeling on the grass in front, while the other six stand behind them. All wear dresses and hats, except for two of the girls who hold theirs in their hands. All have white dresses, except for two, who wear darker colored ones with some white trim and detailing. In the background is a building, though which is not known, and parts of a palm tree and other landscaping are at the left. A part of a sidewalk or walkway is at the lower left corner. The image is slightly out of focus and thereby blurs some of the girls' features. On the reverse is a stamp with the number "242" near the upper left. At the center, written in blue ink by Thomas W. Temple II, likely the photographer, is "San Gabriel Arcangel / 1921 [underlined]." Below this, in pencil, is "standing: ----, Celia Olivares Parriott, Luche Olivares vejar, --- Lugo, CEL, Clara / Kneeling: Inez Temple sister to Wally, Tomas Vida." This was written by Carolina Rowland, the CEL in the inscription, and Vida is Elvira Rowland Ward, her sister, and Clara, her other sister, Clara Rowland Reusch. There is some surface soiling on the reverse and light edge wear, but the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
