Description

Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph of the ruins of El Campo Santo, ca. 1906. Taken from a field to the west, the image shows the remnants of the original west wall and entrance gate, with piles of bricks on wood supports to the left and sections of a board fence next to the wall. The pilasters at the entrance are missing their ball tops, but the cast-iron gate is intact. The surrounding three walls are removed and a few tombstones, such as the Rowland grave at the center and the Mattie Drown site at left next to a large tree are visible. In the far background are some trees, probably along San Jose Creek, but it seemed a foggy, cloudy day when the image was taken. On the reverse is an ink inscription "WORKMAN FAMILY CEMETERY / -West Elevation (orig. wall) / ca. 1900 / - copy from a print in Walter Temple Jr.'s / collection / - copy neg. in architect's file." Below this is a stamp for site restoration architect Raymond Girvigian and the date November 14, 1981. With little indication of wear or damage, the photograph is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
