"Elements of Civil Government," William Carey Jones (Sacramento: State Printing Office) 1891. The item is from the "California State Series of School Text Books" and was assembled by a well-known attorney, professor and diplomat whose namesake father (married to a daughter of Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton and thereby a brother-in-law of John C. Fremont) wrote an important report on pre-American California land titles. The textbook has parts on local, state and federal government and "general considerations," such as taxation, citizenship, elections and civil liberty. The cloth boards are heavily edge rubbed, dented and scratched and a corner is torn, though pages are generally clean and the binding reasonably tight, so the condition is fair.
