Description

Color: Black; Green; Red An empty Westinghouse Mazda Christmas light box, ca. 1920s. The box is fitted together in one piece with slots in the back to secure it. The front panel has a border of double green lines with a thin black line inside. A field of red, which has faded to appear orange, surrounds a square panel with a black background, within which is the product title in red letters. Next to the title is part of a Christmas tree with five electric lights in it. A single green lamp is between the title and the tree. On the back panel is a statement about the manufacture of the lamps and the patents covering them between 1904 and 1914. The four side panels include part of a Christmas tree and the product name on the longer sides and a statement on one of the shorter sides that the box included ten bulbs, while the other short side panel gives the model number, voltage and the Westinghouse logo, although the words "Assorted Colors" are crossed out, because the box was evidently reused to sell red bulbs. This was determined by pencil inscriptions on the back panel reading "Red / For Electric Current," while the price of 27 cents was written at the top left of the front panel. Aside from the faded red color, there are abrasions, creases and general wear on the box, so that is in fair condition.
