Description

Color: Gold; Red "English and Scottish Popular Ballads," edited by Henry Child Sargent and George Lyman Kittredge (Cambridge, Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin & Co., The Riverside Press, 1904), 729 pp. A hardcover book without a dustjacket in red cloth with a gold wreath at the center of the front cover, within which is the title. A gold border is at the edge of the cover, while on the spine is the title at the top and publisher's name at the bottom. The book, from the Cambridge Edition of the Poets, edited by Bliss Perry, is generated from earlier editions from the collection of Francis James Child, who published the editions in the late 19th-century. The collection consists of 305 ballads from England and Scotland with an introduction, ballad fragments, notes, text sources, glossary and index completing the work. Other than a photograph of Child and a print of a place called Abbotsford, there are no illustrations accompanying the text. On the back flyleaf is a pencil inscription: "act [crossed-out] / Bbn." In good condition, the book has some wear on the cover corners and spine, but has little indication of wear and damage otherwise.
