Description

ENVELOPE WITH PUENTE, CALIFORNIA POSTMARK, 1886 Color: Black; Red; White An envelope, without contents, with a Puente, California postmark, July 1886. The item is addressed to "Miss M. P. Scully / Anaheim / Cal." with a crossed out section with the letters "Sa" before Anaheim, indicating that the writer may have been trying to address to Santa Ana. At the upper right is a preprinted 2-cent stamp with an image of Benjamin Franklin on it and next to this is the cancellation stamp with the township name of Puente and the date, which might be July 1." Scully was the daughter of Thomas Scully, a former teacher at the private school of William Workman and who later lived and married in the Santa Ana Canyon area of northeastern Orange County. On the reverse is a partial stamp from the Anaheim post office, but most of the date is not present. The right side of the envelope was torn for opening and there is yellowing, creases, small stains, and some heavy soiling, so the object is in fair condition.
