Description

ENVELOPE WITH ROWLAND-WORKMAN PARTY AIR MAIL DESIGN Color: Blue; Red; White An unused air mail envelope with a Rowland-Workman Party illustration, ca. 1938. The artifact has a border of alternating red, white, and blue sections with a pre-printed "VIA AIR MAIL" at the upper right just below a 6-cent air-mail stamp featuring the American eagle. At the left is a printed design, created by Walter P. Temple, Jr., celebrating the Rowland-Workman Party as part of Air Mail Week. There are two circles in the design; in the outer is the wording at the top: "ROWLAND - WORKMAN PARTY / AIR MAIL WEEK" and at the bottom: "MAY 15-21 1938 / PUENTE, CALIFORNIA." In the inner circle is Temple's drawing of a train of oxen-led Conestoga wagons with an airplane flying overhead. At the bottom of this design is the year "1841." At the upper left is the signature in black ink of Puente post office postmaster Joseph L. Hamilton with his title stamped in blue ink beneath. With slight corner rubbing, acid burns to the right side of the front, creases on the right side, and browning, the object is in good condition.
