Description

EQUATOR-CROSSING INITIATION CEREMONY ON A SHIP Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of an equator-crossing initiation ceremony on a cruise ship, 1930. The group of people participating in the ceremony, which is for those who are crossing the equator for the first time, are in the distance at the top deck of the ship at the center. There are several crewmen in uniforms among the passengers, who are scattered about, with one crewman at the center holding a staff like that of King Neptune. Flanking the group are two funneled stacks with pulleys, and at the back is one of the smoke stacks. On the back is a stamp with reading, "APR 22, 1930 / MADE IN SAN JOSE / 604." The photograph was taken during Agnes Temple's honeymoon and was housed in her album, which is item 96.7.94.1, along with many other photographs which span 96.7.1.1-.93.1. Contact sheets 2000.159.1.1-.8 show the original positioning of the images within the album. With only a light crease on the top left corner, the object is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
