ESTATE OF WILLIAM H. WORKMAN, BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES
Color: Black; White
A lithograph of the estate of William H. Workman, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, from Thompson and West's "History of Los Angeles County, California," 1880. The item is housed in a simple open-window matte and shows the estate in a bird's-eye view from the south with an inset at the lower right of the Workman residence. The latter shows, at the left between the Los Angeles River and the bluffs (known as Paredon Blanco), orange orchards and vineyards. At the right on the bluff side are more orchards, a fenced park-like area with a tall fountain and pool, and overlooking the bluff the residence. This latter is shown in greater detail in the inset, with the view from Boyle Avenue. A picket fence, circular entrance gate and tall stand of trees are in the foreground. A garden with a small gazebo are at the left. The brick house with a two-story central block and one or one-and-a-half story projections is in the rear. A horse and carriage approach the gate from the house and there are children shown with a hoop close to the house. The caption at the bottom identifies the location, the city, and the publisher's names. The house and ranch were previously owned by Workman's father-in-law, Andrew A. Boyle, hence the community name, given in honor of Boyle by Workman, when Boyle Hegihts was founded in 1875. Aside from slight creasing, a few small tears, and light discoloration at the edges, the artifact is in good condition.Lexicon
