Description

A Rococo Revival etagere, ca. 1860s, made of carved mahogony with a large oval mirror, several various sized shelves flanking the mirror, and a crown with intricately carved grapes and flowers. The shelves are half shield shaped with ornate scroll supports. The mirror has trefoil carving above it and there are smaller side mirrors framed in curved wood borders. The artifact has baluster-turned front legs and curved back legs. Part b) is a marble top, serving as a lower shelf below the mirror. The etagere belonged to Thomas Temple and was used in his bedroom in La Casa Nueva, but was passed down to him and dates, by style and comparison to similar pieces, to approximately the 1860s. It was likely, therefore, owned by F. P. F. and A. M. W. Temple, Thomas' grandparents. Restored in 1987, the object is in good condition.
