Description

"Fan Palms," by Elias Atkinson Bonine, ca. 1890s. The view is of a half-dozen fan palm trees behind a brick wall near a brick house alongside a wide unpaved road. A horse-and-buggy are parked next to the house, there is part of a structure at the left within the enclosure and there are also smaller trees, perhaps orange, within the fenced area, as well. A pencil inscription on the reverse is: "The oldest palms in / Los Angeles (California) / eleven miles from Sunny / Slope." This identifies the location as Los Angeles city and Sunny Slope was the ranch of Leonard J. Rose in the San Gabriel Valley. Identification for Bonine's Lamanda Park [Pasadena] location are at the bottom and reverse. With mount curvature, edge rubbing and light soiling, the condition is good.
