Description

FARMERS AND MERCHANS BANK CHECK, RICHARD GARVEY, 1899 Color: Black; White A cancelled check on interest for overdrafts on account with The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Los Angeles from Richard Garvey, 31 March 1899. The preprinted check has the word "INTEREST" on the left and spaces for the date, amount paid, the bank name and location, the month for which the payment was made, a line for writing the amount, a space for the account holder's name, and a line for the cashier's signature. On the back are columns for date and amount for thirty-one transactions, presumably for a month. Written in ink are monetary figures for all thirty-one days and final totals. All information on the front is filled out with the dates stamped and the rest in ink. A faint paid stamp is in blue at the upper left and a paid stamp was punched through at the lower right. Garvey was a significant landholder in the San Gabriel Valley and associated with the Workman and Temple families. Except for slight staining at the upper right of the front and some light yellowing, the condition is good overall.
