Description

FATHER JUNIPERO SERRA STATUE AT MISSION SAN GABRIEL Color: Black; White A photograph of a statue of Father Junipero Serra, located at the Mission San Gabriel, ca. 1930. The figure of the founder of many of the California missions is in a dark material and shows him wearing his friar's robe and holding a walking stick in his right hand. The statue is placed on a large white base that tapers to a wide bottom and there is an inscription on the side facing the camera, which is not visible (see, however, 96.7.60.2 for a better image and transcription.) At the ground level is a short cast-iron fence within which are some small plants. In the background are some large trees and what may be part of a building at the far left. On the center of the reverse is a oval stamp with the name of the Anderson Photo Service in El Monte and the number "24" is stamped at the lower left corner. On the lower right and top right of the front are stains from mounting corners, though they are rather faint and there is some light surface soiling, so the artifact is basically in good condition. Number-Units: 1
