Description

Color: Black; Orange; White "Mission San Gabriel, Estab., Sept 8th, 1771," a stereoview by Carleton Watkins as part of Watkins' New Series of Pacific Coast Views, late 1870s. The image shows the north elevation of the historic church with its distinctive bell tower at the left and the staircase and balcony at the rear of the church at the right. At the far left is a portion of the roof and a trellis at the rectory. In the foreground is the dirt Mission Road. A horse is tethered to a cactus at the left of center and there are some trees, a man standing near the church at the center and a person at the balcony at the far right. At the lower right is the caption and an ID number "4023." At the left margin is the series name and Watkins' San Francisco studio address, with an ink inscription of "California" next to the latter. At the right margin is a description of the series. In good condition, the item has edge and corner rubbing, surface soiling, especially on the blank reverse, slight yellowing of the image, fading of the caption lettering and some of the cover of the matte, handling stains and small tears to the matte at the corner.
