Description

"FIRST ANNUAL REPORT OF THE UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY" Color: Black; White "First Annual Report of the United States Geological Survey," by Clarence King and published by the Government Printing Office, 1880. The 79-page item was rebound in a library softcover binding, probably in the 1950s. Contents include a historical essay on the Survey; a description of geographical field divisions; a statement on office work operations, including charts of Survey personnnel, a cash statement, and a list of expenditures; reports for each geographical field division, describing survey work conducted; a report from the laboratory of the Survey; a statement by the special agent of the Census Office with respect to the Comstock Lode mining region of Nevada; a description of work on mineral statistics; a chart of census appointments; another, with a report, on those involved in surveying mining areas east of the Mississippi River; a list of forthcoming publications by the Survey; and an essay on the Survey's future. At the back is a fold-out map denoting the geographical field divisions of the Survey with green-colored divisions denoting those organized and in operation--all from the Rocky Mountains west, while others are plotted but not operational in the Midwest, South, and East. The map shows common features, such as cities and towns, mountain ranges, bodies of water, state boundaries, and so forth, as well. The map, however, was torn loose while cataloging. With library tape; spine brittleness; cover creases, corner dents, soiling, and stains; page yellowing; a loose spine; stamps, pencil markings, and other inscriptions; some losses on a few pages; and tears on pages and the spine top, the condition is good overall.
