Description

Color: Black; White "First Gold Discovery in California," by Arthur Woodward (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum,) 1949. The white-colored leaflet has a black and white illustration at the top of the front of a man in Spanish dress crouching down while looking into the palm of his right hand. A Native American, who stands over him, points to the latter man's hand. A dagger is jammed into the ground between the two. In the bakground are the men's horses, several shrubs, and hills. The title of the publication and the author's name are in black below the illustration. Within is the story of Don Francisco Lopez who, along with an Indian servant, discovered gold in a side canyon of Rancho San Francisco in 1842. On the back is a bibliography. The artifact has light creases, a dented corner, some yellowing of the paper, and some foxing, but is otherwise in good condition.
