Description

Color: White A French Normandy bedspread, ca. 1920s. With lace and embroidered panels joined together in a symmetrical pattern, the item is identifiable as French Normandy work. The piece has sections on the long ends of tightly woven netting and floral embroidery, including joined flowers along the edge and 42 cross-like flowers linked to the edge designs by single thread "vines." Closer to the center are three sets of flower patterns that get smaller as they approach the middle. The center panel has a two-line border with floral designs within it on the sides, while at one end is a dual-border with roses and at the other end are vine-and-leaf patterns. At this latter end, there is a section separated by a bar from the rest of the center panel. Within this area are two half-circles at the sides and a full circle in the middle, joined by diagonal lines forming a diamond. Embroidered flowers and vines with leaves are found within the flowers and lines as well as at the joints of the diamond. The rest of the panel consists of a pattern, in which, at the ends, are ovals with two circles next to them joined by a bar superimposed over the ovals. At the oval ends are bars linking the two in a diamond shape. Along these bars are six large half-circles on the outside and six smaller half-circles on the inside with one full circle at the very center of the piece. Again, there are embroidered vines, leaves, and flowers within the circles, with floral designs in the weaves of the diagonal lines and within the circles and lines. With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition.
