Description

Color: Black; White A photograph of a burial site in the cast-iron fenced plot in El Campo Santo Cemetery, ca. 1918. What appears to be the northeastern corner of the plot is shown with two men in suits carrying shovels and standing next to or near a mound with flowers on it, suggesting a recently completed burial site. Other flowers, including calla lillies and fern leaves litter the area around the site. In the foreground are at least three small, possbly wooden, headstones in the ground. Behind the men and going across the image are the northwestern and eastern sections of the cast-iron fence and part of the brick foundation for it. In the background are high weeds. At the lower left corner looks to be a succulent plant. Two possibilities as far as date and who might have been buried are surmised. Because Walter Temple purchased the Homestead in November 1917, this might be the burial of his brother Charles, who died in October 1918. It might also be the funeral of his brother, William, who died in February 1917, assuming permission was obtained by the owners, Pratt and Bassett, to allow the funeral. This latter date is surmised by the presence of calla lillies and when they grow. With several significant creases, edge dents and tears, browning of the paper, surface soiling and a large water stain at the lower right, the condition is fair. Number-Units: 1
