Description

Color: White A girl's white full-length flared summer dress, ca. 1900. The artifact has a good deal of cutwork, mainly consisting of horizontal lines with curved linear patterns within at the collar; sleeves; waist; below the hips and toward the hemline at the bottom of the piece. At the front there is one horizontal line from the left shoulder toward the waist, while another line from the right shoulder curves inward toward the middle and then downward it turns four times at angles before reaching the waist. Along this line is the sole area of embroidery, being a vine with flowers and leaves. There are also five fabric buttons along this line and another lower at the waistline. At the collar is mesh-like work with vertical lines and, at the right side, two flowers. Three bands of two-inch high fabric are also at the lower part of the dress to give it a layered effect. From the waistline and hip area of the front and throughout the back are long, thin vertical lines of fabric. Closing is in the back, consisting of hooks and clasps at the top and bottom of the closing and four buttons in the middle. Though there are several small stains throughout and some loose thread, the piece is generally in good condition.
