Description

A colored photographic postcard of the Azusa grammar school, ca. 1907. The structure features a central bell tower above the entrance and at least two blocks of rooms, one projecting slightly forward at right and the other set back at the rear. There is some gingerbread work visible on the front facade, so it seems the building may have been built in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Several trees obscure part of the structure and hints of smaller structures may be discerned at far left and right. A path leads to the entrance through an undeveloped front area consisting largely of weeds and rocks. The card was written by a Glenn D. of Azusa and sent to Birdie Crowell of Riverside, dated 23 August 1907 and postmarked the next morning. The card was published for Thomas Drug Company of Azusa by Newman Post Card Company of Los Angeles and made in Germany. In good condition with dented corners and edges, slight stains on the back and some discoloration. The note is written in black ink and reads, "Have not written that/letter yet but will try to/some of these days. Received/a card from Will H. so am/sending him one to-day./Did you have a good time over at Catalina?/I suppose every thing looks "black" to you now./Regards to all. Glenn D./8/23, Azusa Cal."
