A portfolio of photographs, "Grand Opening of the Metropolitan Warehouse and Industrial District, Los Angeles, January 22, 1925." The item is a collection of fourteen photographs and two Los Angeles Times newspaper clippings showing the groundbreaking and development of the 80-acre tract on the east side of the Los Angeles River from below First to below Seventh streets in the Boyle Heights neighborhood. There is a photo of industrial buildings, including the Pillsbury Flour Mills Company structure at left and three others. Other photos show Carl Gray, president of the Union Pacific Railroad and officials of the contractor, the Austin Company, in group shots and pulling a symbolic plow, as well as Gray addressing participants and photos of individuals and small groups. At the rear are two clippings from the Los Angeles Times discussing the opening of the subdivision, one showing an aerial photo with the project area in map form. With the binder curled, torn, stained, and the labeling almost completely faded, while the photos are curled, edge rubbed and sometimes creased and soiled, and the clippings are browned and one torn, the overall condition is fair.
