Description

GRAVE OF JUAN DE JESUS DAVIS, MISSION SAN GABRIEL CEMETERY, ca. 1915. Color: Black; White The photograph shows two women standing behind the grave of Juan de Jesus Davis in the Mission San Gabriel Cemetery. The grave marker shows his birthdate as November 4, 1864, in San Francisco. He died at the age of 37 years, 4 months and 11 days old in New Mexico. The tall headstone has a cross at the top of it, a symbol of two shaking hands engraved in a circular niche, and a rope pattern surrounds the top of the stone. There is a message engraved on the tombstone in Spanish that reads, he rests the remains of Juan de Jesus Davis. At the very bottom of the stone shows a message wishing that his soul rests in peace. The two women wear oversized hats made of wicker, pin stripped dresses. In the background are wooden crosses of other grave sites, a white picket fence surrounding a burial and several trees. It is in good condition with only minor discoloration and a stamp sharing the location.
