HANGING GOURD OUTSIDE THE TEPEE, LA CASA NUEVA, 1940
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph and a duplicate of a gourd hanging from the rough wood patio cover at the Tepee, 1940. The close-up view shows the round, smooth-shaped gourd at center hanging from a rope or similar material from a crossbeam of the cover. Two vertical poles with notches, as if cut with an axe are on the low wall on the patio, while wood beams extend from the Tepee wall, at left, to the poles. A header spans the poles, while smaller pieces of wood are also between the beams. Only a small portion of the wall and the east window of the Tepee are visible. At background right is a portion of the west wall of La Casa Nueva. Branches and leaves from sycamore trees and other vegetation are also around the Tepee. A pencil inscription on the upper reverse by a former museum curator reads "Tepee porch cover. Photo taken by Neal Dyste, circa 1940. Source: The Workman and Temple Homestead Archives." With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition.
