Description

Color: Blue; Gold "History of Los Angeles County, Volume One" by John Steven McGroarty (Chicago and New York: The American Historical Society, Inc.,) 1923. The hardcover book consists of 505 pages and is the first of three volumes. It has a pebbled leather cover in navy blue with gold spine lettering giving the title, volume number, note that there is an index, and the author's last name. There are marbled flysheets in the work, which has fifty-two chapters embracing the history of the county, its cities, towns, and communities and ranging from the Spanish era to the present. There is also a reprinting of the memoirs of Benjamin S. Wilson concerning the pre-American period in California, in which mention is made of William Workman's involvement in Mexican California politics. The section on the city of Montebello also relates the discovery of oil in the Montebello Hills by Thomas W. Temple and some of the Temple family history. References are also made to the Temple and Workman bank in the text, which is illustrated with many photographs. With cover and spine rubbing, slightly dented corners, minor soiling, page yellowing, slight fading of spine lettering and of the page edge gilding, and slight tears at the cover and spine edges, the condition is good.
