Description

Color: Black; Blue; Gray "Homes of Character," a catalog issued by the Lewis Manufacturing Company, 1924. The front cover, which is a light gray paper with a faux leather texture, has a light-blue Classical border with vine-like scrolls, pedestals and more plant-like designs. At the top of the panel formed within the border are, in large black letters, the words "LEWIS HOMES." Below is a color drawing of a Cape Cod-style house. At the bottom of the panel in smaller black letters is the title. At the frontspiece is an image of another Cape Cod-style home, followed by a page with a certificate, in which is the "Lewis 7-Point Protection" for buyers of the company's house plans. An essay on "Your Home: The Most Important Purchase of a Lifetime" follows, discussing the four essentials, including a good design, efficient plan, the right material, and sound construction. The table of contents lists plans by type, sometimes stylistic (Bungalows, Colonial) or usually descriptive (two-story, two-family, summer cottages) with specific plans for doors, garages and additions. Sections for general specifications, questions and answers and terms of purchase are at the back. A list of plan names, presented alphabetically, is also on the table. Plans are offered from the largest to the smallest, with the name, a black and white photograph of the front elevation, floor plans, and brief descriptions. A price list, order form, and thank you sheet are items 1.2 through 1.4 Other than some dented corners and abrasions on the edges of the cover, the artifact is in good condition.
