Description

Color: Silver; Yellow "House & Garden's Book of Color Schemes," edited by Richardson Wright and Margaret McElroy (New York: The Conde Nast Publications, Inc.), 1929. A 227-page hardcover book with a yellow cover. On the front, within a silver border is a design with stars, stalks and leaves, stars, and angled lines--all silver. The title, also in silver letters, is at the center. It is repeated on the spine with a set of three small horizontal liens and a star at the top and bottom. A table of contents lists the many short articles contained in the book and concern the use of color in interior decoration from a wide variety of approaches too numerous to list. Most concern decoration in particular architectural styles, types of rooms, or by material and are accompanied either by black and white photographs of furnished and decorated rooms in fashionable and upper class residences or by color drawings. Some homes are overseas, but most are in the United States, including one Spanish Colonial Revival residence in Santa Barbara. Articles on developing a color scheme, knowing colors and their definitions, addresses of decorators, architects, and artists, and a list of trade literature are at the back of the book. In fair condition, the binding is loose and pages are slightly loose, but there is much soiling and staining on the covers and their insides and flyleaves with the cover corners heavily dented.
