Description

Color: Black; Blue; Brown; White; Yellow "How To Best See The Pacific Coast," a pamphlet issued by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, 1928. The front panel has the title in white letters at the top and the company name in black letters at the bottom. In between is an oil painting of a train traveling in a coastal scene. The back panel has the same titling, only the pamphlet title is in red and the image is of a train in a mountainous area. When opened, the first section has a map of the United States that shows four land and one sea route for coming to the Pacific Coast from the eastern states and a description of the options. Inner sections, with photograph illustrations, detail the Sunset, Shasta, Overland, and Golden State routes. The centerfold has a map of the coast with various company routes, including those described, and some text on the several routes. At the back are more photos that show conveniences offered to train travelers, such as barber service, observation platforms, club cars, and showers. The last section details accomodations on the four main train routes and the overland ocean passage, available route booklets, and company representatives for trip planning. With only staple tarnish and rust, and edge and corner abrasions, the artifact's overall condition is good.
