Description

HOW TO MAKE DRAPERIES, SLIP COVERS, CUSHIONS AND OTHER HOME FURNISHINGS Color: Black; Blue; Orange; White A pamphlet, "How to Make Draperies, Slip Covers, Cushions and other Home Furnishings the Modern Singer Way," number four of the Singer Service Library (New York: Singer Sewing Machine Co., Inc.), 1929. The item has 64 pages and the front cover shows a color image of a woman sewing drapery on a Singer machine. In a floral border at the bottom of the image is the series name and number, under which is the title, company name, and price of twenty-five cents. The back cover describes the Singer Service for women who used the company's machines. The table of contents are on the inside front cover delineating two main sections: how to make drapery and making slip covers, cushions and other home furnishings. There are many subsections within these main ones with Mary Brooks Picken writing a part on "How to Make Draperies the Modern Singer Way." General design issues for residences, materials, accessories and many types of draperies are discussed. There is no listed author for the second section, which elucidates the making of slip covers, wall hangings, bed furnishings, clothes closets, sewing baskets and bags and the care of fabric furnishings. There are many black and white drawings and diagrams for the making and appearance of listed items. A reference index and ad for Singer sewing machines are at the back. With fairly extensive surface soiling and creases on the cover, creased upper right corners and light soiling on pages, and a small tear at the upper left back cover, the artifact is in fair condition.
