Color: Black; Green; Orange; Purple; Red; White
"How to Make Dresses the Modern Singer Way" by Mary Brooks Picken (New York: Singer Sewing Machine Co., Inc.,) 1927. The 48-page softcover pamphlet has an image at the top of the front cover of a woman admiring a green dress she wears, while a Singer sewing machine and table are at the left of what might be a bedroom in a home. In a bordered box below the image is "NEW ADVENTURES IN SEWING." Underneath this is the title and publisher's name. Red and green floral borders are around the image and pamphlet title. The Singer logo and motto are on the center of the back. A foreword is on the inside front cover and the text begins on page one. Sections include dressmaking equipment; machine-made seams; stitching fabrics; style and fabric selection; handling fabrics; using patterns; selecting and altering patterns; cutting out a dress; assembling and finishing a one-piece dress; turning and finishing hems; finishing edges; neck and front finishes; cording; shirring and ruffling; collars and cuffs; tailoring the modern way; applied trimmings and finishes; making pockets; bound buttonholes; belts and ties; plaiting; tucking; making two-piece, party, and sleeveless dresses; making a coat; and style and construction. There are drawings and instructions with all sections. At the back are a reference index, and an advertisement for the pamphlet "Short Cuts to Home Sewing." Aside from minor cover creases, a small stain on the front and light soiling and wear, the artifact is in good condition.
