Description

ISABELLA DROWN, WIFE OF J. WALTER DROWN, CA. 1880S Photograph: A black and white photograph of Isabella Drown, wife of J. Walter Drown, ca. 1880s. The photograph shows Mrs. Drown in a head and shoulders portrait with a white dress, dark collar, and dark hat. The smallness of the photograph and the oval shape of the image suggests it might have been in a locket. See 96.35.184-.187 for photos of who appear to be two of her children. Mrs. Drown was the wife of J. Walter Drown, who was adopted by F.P.F. Temple after his father's death in 1863. Drown, whose middle name was given to Walter P. Temple, lived at the Workman Homestead in the census of 1880 with his wife and two children. In 1886, he was the ranch foreman of William H. Workman in Boyle Heights. Later, in the 1920s, Mrs. Drown was interviewed by Perry Worden for the Temple and Workman family history. The photo is in good condition with some edge wear. From the Thomas Temple Collection, donated by Ruth Ann Michaelis. In pencil on the back is "Mrs. Drown." Number-Units: 1
