Description

A cabinet card of J. Philip Erie's house and automobile in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, California. 1897. The large, multi-storied structure with unusual rounded corners sat on a raised foundation and was located on State Street across from Hollenbeck Park. The front lawn has trees, bushes and other plants. There is a woman sitting in a chair on the front porch, she has a baby in her lap. Erie sits in the first automobile in Los Angeles, made from his design and specifications (see 96.24.1.1 for a photo of the vehicle with William H. Workman as the first passenger.) The road is a dirt road and there is a hitching post on the right side of the image. The image was taken by Putnam at the Temple Block in Los Angeles. With wear in all corners, fading, and foxing, the object is in good condition overall.
