Description

JOHN H. TEMPLE NOTES CONCERNING ALCATRAZ ISLAND Color: Black; White A sheet of notes by John H. Temple about his claim to Alcatraz Island, ca. 1898. The undated item is in plain lined paper. On one side is his statement, which details a series of deeds and bequests within the Temple family to the rights to the island. John H. Temple claims that he, at the time of these notes, was the only rightful heir to the island. On the reverse is the conclusion of the statement, but there are several inscriptions. At the upper rigtb is "J. M. Work . . ." which appears to be the name of William Workman's son and John Temple's cousin, Joseph M. Workman. Below this is "Los Anglees March 4, 1856," the date Temple's father, F. P. F., wrote a letter to attorney Volney Howard of San Francisco about his claim to Alcatraz. At the bottom is the address of Francis Preston Fremont, son of John C. Fremont, who bought the island on a U. S. bond from F. P. F. Temple in 1847. The address of Francis Fremont is in the Phillipines. At the bottom left is a cryptic "Point San Jose / Vaness Ave," which may refer somehow to San Francisco. The address in the Phillipines hints at the Spanish-American War and J. M. Workman's death was in 1901, hence the estimated date. With much creasing, vertical and horizontal folds, small tears along a few folds and page browning, the overall condition is fair.
