Description

Color: Black and white A black and white photograph of the dedication of the Joseph L. Kauffman Memorial at the Temple Oil Lease, Old Mission, Montebello, California, 13 July 1919. Taken by Los Angeles photographer George Steckel from the west, the monument is at right covered in a large floral wreath. Behind it is a covered dais with a speaker at the front and people seated behind him to the right. At center under a white tent are a large group of spectators seated. At the foreground left are a group of soldiers. In the background are three of the Temple lease wells and a part of the roof and sign for the Temple Oil Station. A flagpole with American flag is seen just behind the white tent. Steckel's name and location are at the front bottom and his name, location, and list of awards are on the back. The memorial was for the brother of Walter Temple's business manager, Milton Kauffman, who was killed in the Argonne Forest in September 1918. Temple paid for the memorial, the first of its kind in California and the monument was moved in May 1930 to Temple City Park, where it now stands. The board on which the image is glued has the two left corners torn off and portions of the other two corners chipped off; water stains at top and bottom and discoloration, so it is in fair condition.
