LA CASA NUEVA FROM THE CENTER DRIVEWAY AT EVERGREEN LANE
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of La Casa Nueva, seen from the southeast, ca. 1942. The photographer stands at the intersection of the center driveway and Evergreen Lane. Most of the house is obscured by plantings and the Mission Walkway, except for the second floor east wing and a small portion of the courtyard, seen through the walkway's southeast arched entrance. Parked on Evergreen Lane at left is a black 1939 Buick club coupe, owned by Lois Brown, part-owner of the El Encanto Sanatorium, which owned the Homestead. Flanking the arched entry are two large cypress, while to the right in the planter bed are palms, bushes and shrubs and grape vines climbing the Mission Walkway wall. Large sycamores, denuded of leaves are in the left background. On the center reverse is the penciled number "33," while at the bottom, in the hand of a former museum curator, is the pencil inscription "Mr. Brown's mother's 39 club coupe / buick [sic]." With little indication of wear or damage, the object is in good condition.
