Description

Color: Black, blue, brown A program for La Fiesta de San Gabriel, September 1960. Wrapped in a blue paper cover with the front showing an image of the Mission San Gabriel and its name; its motto as "The Queen of the Missions"; and a notation that it had been operated by the Claretian Fathers since 1908. At the bottom is the fiesta title and dates held. The 44-page program outlines events for the commemoration of the founding of the mission on 8 September 1771. Included are introductory comments by Thomas W. Temple II, who was the mission historian and editor of the program; a proclamation by the mayor of San Gabriel, George H. Smith; a biography of the Mission pastor Bernard O'Connor; facts about the city; a list of events for the four-day celebration; a brief history of the Mission; an article about the ownership of the Mission by William Workman and Hugo Reid; an article about local development; and a photograph of Temple family members at the 1959 Pioneer Reception hosted by Thomas and Gabriela Temple; and many advertisements from local businesses. Aside from some discoloration at the edges of the cover, the program is in good condition.
