Description

Color: Black; Orange; White "La Reina; Los Angeles in Three Centuries," by Laurence L. Hill (Los Angeles: Security Trust and Savings Bank, 1929), 208 pp. The book has an orange cardstock cover with a black and white photograph of the plaza church at the center of the front. The title is at the top of the image and the subtitle is at the bottom, both in orange. On the center of the back is a black and white photograph of a paved street lined by palm trees. Two automobiles are parked at the curb on the right. At the bottom of the image is a white square box with words that read "These Palms Bear / Witness," followed by a brief description of the many innovations in Los Angeles history. At the beginning of the inside are a label announcing the merger of the Security Trust and Savings Bank with the Los Angeles-First Trust and Savings Bank, and a title page. The artifact covers the history of the city from the rancho period to the date of publication, looking at such topics as the Rowland-Workman expedition; city pioneers; transportation; education; recreation; business; the demolition of the Temple Block and the construction of City Hall; government; culture; and much more. Many black and white photographs are included. The book was published for the fortieth anniversary of the Security Trust and Savings Bank. With abrasions; dented corners; some pest damage; surface soiling; and small tears along the cover edges, the object is in fair condition.
