Painting: An oil painting of a Laguna Beach landscape by Gertrude Gardner, ca. 1930. Housed in a plain burnished gold frame, the work on canvas shows a scene that appears to be just west of the main beach at Laguna. A person is standing at the center at water level on a rock with a staircase at left, several cypress trees at center left, a beach and vaguely Spanish-looking buildings at center right and hills and clouds in the background. Primary colors used include green for the water, trees, hills, and sky, white for clouds, brown for the staircase and stand and reddish tints for the building roofs. Gardner, a native of Iowa, lived at Laguna Beach after studying and living in France, New York, and Maine. In 1929, the year before this painting was created, she lived at Flushing, Long Island. In good condition with some damage at the right center edge and small dents and stains in the frame front and paper loss at the back of the frame. The painting is signed and dated at lower right, but not visible because of the frame. On the upper center back of the frame in pencil is "GERTRUDE GARDNER/LAGUNA ARTIST."Lexicon
