Description

LAKE AT BALDWIN'S RANCH, SANTA ANITA, CALIFORNIA Postcard: A color postcard titled "Lake at Baldwin's Ranch, Santa Anita, California." Shows the lake in the foreground with the Queen Anne Cottage, built in 1889, seen at center background. There is a profusion of landscaping, including trees, bushes, and shrubs visible throughout with a blue sky and low white clouds in the background. The Rancho Santa Anita was owned by Hugo and Victoria Reid, who built an adobe (see 97.13.1) near the cottage site. In 1875, Baldwin purchased the rancho from Harris Newmark and used the Reid Adobe as his quarters, while the Queen Anne Cottage was used by his wives and daughters. Later, the site became the Los Angeles State and County Arboretum. The card, published by Edw. H. Mitchell of San Francisco, is in good condition with discoloration, edge wear, and a small crease at the lower right corner. None
